A new store in Port Lavaca is introducing residents to a wider range of Asian flavors and food experiences. Blue Harvest Market recently opened its doors, offering a growing selection of Asian snacks, frozen treats, and boba drinks.
The store is owned by PawLah Taloh, Chit Yee Lae and Glory Htoo, who have lived in Port Lavaca for 15 years and saw a need for more cultural variety in the area’s food options.
“We wanted to bring our culture into Port Lavaca and we also love boba drinks,” Taloh said. “It’s a far drive to get boba and we wanted it to be closer, so other people can taste and try it.”
Taloh said the idea for the market came from their own experiences searching for snacks and drinks they grew up with, many of which weren’t available in local stores. Over time, the plan grew from a simple idea to a full storefront stocked with carefully curated items that reflect the owners’ backgrounds and interests.
The market features a variety of packaged goods from Korea, Japan and other Asian countries. Customers can browse shelves filled with unique chips, noodles, candy, frozen desserts, bottled drinks, sauces and pantry staples.
One of the biggest draws so far has been the boba counter, which offers a range of milk and fruit tea options with customizable toppings.
“Everyone is coming in with big smiles on their face [and] trying different types of boba drinks,” Taloh said. “It’s really fun connecting with the customers and listening to what they want to try and what food or drink has been good. We are open to new ideas and suggestions.”
For the owners, the store is not just a business — it’s also a way to share part of their heritage with others in town.
“I hope people can discover the different types of Asian food we have to offer,” Taloh said. “As Karen people, we’re proud to share our traditional dishes and give everyone a taste of our culture. From Karen specialties to Japanese snacks, Korean treats and more, our store brings a variety of Asian flavors to Port Lavaca, making it easy for everyone to experience different cultures close to home.”
Blue Harvest Market also serves as an entry point for customers who may not be familiar with Asian cuisine, but are curious and want to try something new.
Taloh said the response from the community has been welcoming and the owners hope to continue adding new products and listening to customer requests to make sure the store stays fresh and engaging.
“We’ve had people stop in just to look around and ask questions,” Taloh said. “Some recognize items from trips they’ve taken or things they’ve seen online. Others have never tried anything like this before, but they’re excited to learn.”
The store is open, from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It is closed on Sundays. Blue Harvest Market is located at 220 TX-35, Port Lavaca.
